Inspiring Makers

Artichoke are committed to nurturing and inspiring the next talented makers for new generations of master craftspeople. From 100,000 master furniture makers 150 years ago in this country, there are now around 1,000. As leaders in our field, we have a responsibility to build a legacy that can be sustained for generations to come. Not just in what we make but the people able to make it.

New Makers’ Conference

The New Makers’ Conference was originated by Artichoke and is organised jointly with the Furniture Makers’ Company. Held annually in May it draws speakers and attendees from across the world. 2024 saw a vibrant collection of topics and expertise with plans for 2025 set to expand our reach and interest significantly. To register your early interest and ensure the best chance of a ticket for 2025, please follow this link here.

Artichoke also speaks at many other industry events throughout the year – sharing knowledge and adjudicating awards for the next generation of makers.

Artichoke School of Furniture

Since 2019 we have invested our time, energy and money into building our own school of furniture making. Based in our workshops in Somerset, this is a six week introductory course to give aspiring young makers a taste of how a world-class workshop operates. With teaching from the Artichoke team the course is free but on a first come, first served basis. You can download the course details here and enquire from our contacts page here. The next course will run in September 2024.

Further Education

Our founder Bruce Hodgson sits on the advisory board of the Building Crafts College – a specialist stone masonry, construction and carpentry college situated in London with a long tradition of delivering high quality education training in building crafts and building conservation.

Bruce’s links with this highly regarded college provide a natural follow on from the Artichoke School of Furniture.
